Work on Your Game with Dre Baldwin

On this episode of the Brilliance Beyond Borders podcast, I spoke with Dre Baldwin, an international social media expert, author, entrepreneur, and business coach. After graduating with a business degree from Penn State Altoona in 2004, Dre played professional basketball internationally for nine years in eight different countries. At the same time, Dre built a content publishing empire.

Blogging since 2005 and publishing videos to YouTube starting in 2006, Dre has published over 8,000 videos with his content being viewed over 73 million times. Dre's daily Work On Your Game Podcast has over three million listeners. Dre has delivered four TEDxTalks and authored 27 books. Most recently, he authored The Third Day: The Decision that Separates the Pros from the Amateurs. Be sure to grab your copy!

Leveraging the following foundational principles, Dre shares how he went from his high school team's bench to a nine-year professional basketball career in just five years:

1. Work on your game.

  • After starting his YouTube channel, Dre’s subscribers continually asked for advice and techniques to improve their basketball skills. His answer was simple: “I'm in the gym, working on my game.” In order to improve, advice alone is not enough; you must work on your game. This mentality applies to all aspects of life. Each of us must individually put in the work in order to improve.

2. Find leverage on yourself.

  • In order to achieve results, you must find leverage on yourself. That leverage may be something you like, something that you want, or something you want to avoid. You must be clear on what these incentives and disincentives are, and use them to set yourself up for success.

3. Fall in love with the process, not just the results.

  • A lot of people are enamored by results, but fail to realize the time and building blocks required to create those results. Consistency is what separates professionals from amateurs. It is that willingness to continually show up every single day, especially after the initial motivation wears off.
